Xbox One Won’t Feature Twitch Livestreaming at Launch

This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Planning on showing the world your Forza 5 skills on Friday? Think again.

The Xbox One’s livestreaming capabilities will not be available at launch, Microsoft announced today. First announced during Microsoft’s E3 press conference earlier this year, Xbox Live Gold members can use the new console to record and stream gameplay sessions via Twitch. The console can also record “magic moments” like achievements automatically for later distribution. Players can also use the Kinect record voice-over commentary.

“We know the ability to instantly broadcast gameplay is something the gaming community is excited about, and we are too,” Microsoft explained via press release. “We are working to ensure the initial Twitch on Xbox One broadcasting experience meets the expectations of the Twitch community, so while this feature won’t be available right away, we’ll let you know as soon as it is ready. Our goal is to deliver it during the first part of 2014.”

The PS4’s streaming feature, which is currently functional, allows all players to upload their content to either Twitch or Ustream, and has similar voice-over capabilities using the optional PlayStation Camera.

The Twitch app will be operational when the Xbox One launches on Friday, allowing users to view streaming content on the console, even if they can’t record their own. As with many streaming video apps, the Xbox One version of Twitch will feature unscored achievements for certain viewing milestones.

Microsoft revealed some of the achievements users will be able to earn when watch content on Twitch:

  • Newcomer: Watch one hour of live video.
  • Competitive: Watch 10 hours of live video.
  • Best Viewer: Watch 100 hours of live video.
  • Hipster: Watch one hour of live video on channels that have less than 10 viewers.
  • Talent Scout: Watch 10 hours of live video on channels that have less than 10 viewers.
  • Max Bandwidth: Watch a single channel for more than eight hours consecutively.
  • Around The Clock: watch at least one minute of live video in each hour of a full day.
  • Prime Time: Watch a total of 10 hours of live video between peak viewing hours from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., on a weekday.

The Xbox One launches this friday, November 22.
