The String Arcade Game Music Album Launches Next Month

The String Arcade is a unique collection of 15 pieces of video game music arranged for a string quartet.

The String Arcade went to Kickstarter last year seeking $6000 to make a recording of “well curated” video game music arranged for string quartet. It ended up with almost $7800, toddled off to do its thing and has now returned with 15 tracks, each one “creatively interpreted, embellished and reimagined to capture emotions evoked by the games,” which range from arcade classics to modern hits:

  • Grasswalk (Plants vs. Zombies)
  • Echos of Ecco (Ecco the Dolphin)
  • Ferdinand Wanders Out For a Late Night Haircut (Pettington Park)
  • Engii (FTL – Faster Than Light)
  • Sonic 2 Scherzo (Sonic the Hedgehog 2)
  • Outlaws Title Theme (Outlaws)
  • Medicated Cow Walks the Cobbled Streets with Disgruntled Goat (Ravenshire Castle)
  • Scurvy Scallywags Theme (Scurvy Scallywags)
  • Scabb Cemetery/International House of Mojo (The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge)
  • Altered Beast Title Theme (Altered Beast)
  • Optimism For an Improvement in The John Situation
  • Turret Suite (Portal 2)
  • Minecraft Title Theme (Minecraft)
  • Tron Arcade Medley (Tron Arcade)
  • Tango Down (graBLOX)
  • Dance of the Space Bugs (Galaga)
  • The Legend of Zelda (The Legend of Zelda)

“Grasswalk” has been released on Soundcloud to provide a taste of what’s in store, and while I would have a hard time picking it out as a PvZ song (the only one that really stuck with me is “Zombies On Your Lawn”), it’s pretty fantastic in its own right.

The String Arcade has already been distributed to Kickstarter backers and will be released to the general public on February 11. Preorders may be placed now for either the digital version at iTunes or for the CD release, which includes two bonus tracks, at Bandcamp. Both versions currently offer a prerelease discount of $2, and all proceeds raised by album sales will go to the Alameda Music Project, a tuition-free after-school music program set to launch in September.
