4.2 million PS4s sold so far, and it hasn’t even begun selling in Japan yet.
“I’m very proud we got our fair share of stock, but it’s still not enough,” says Sony UK MD Fergal Gara, talking about the PS4. “We want more, we need more. Retail is still not stocked fully.” So it should come as no surprise that the PS4 is outselling Xbox One in the UK, by a factor of 1.5 to 1. Yes, there is a joke in there about someone buying half a PS4. Pretend it was told. Pretend it was wonderful. Now let’s move on.
Sony’s announced sales of 4.2 million units globally, and Gara expects that number to grow considerably, describing the sales numbers so far as a “suppressed figure.” The PS4 still hasn’t launched in Japan, and it still hasn’t enough supply to meet demand in several of its major markets, including the UK.
Back in November last year analysts IHS predicted that the PS4 would have the sales edge over the next four years, and would dominate in Europe, the UK and Japan. So far, the PS4 seems to be living up to IHS’ expectations.
