Abilities Exposé #4

This article is over 17 years old and may contain outdated information

Now in our fourth week, we get a look at a nice cross-section of abilities from this frantic, PvP-driven MMORPG. Auran shows us Timejump, Retribution, Thunderblast and Winter’s Embrace in this new selection of things players will be able to learn when Fury kicks off.

imagePicking a class in most MMOs is a difficult decision. In choosing a class you effectively make a decision about what role you’d like to play. From this point on you’re left at the discretion of the development team as to how they envision the class’s gameplay, role and balance. Hopefully their vision and balance align with yours. If it doesn’t, it may be time to re-roll or even time for a new game.

Fury breaks the class mold entirely. In Fury, you are able to learn abilities from each of the four schools and eight disciplines. You are then given the freedom to create templates consisting of any of the abilities your avatar has learned. You aren’t tied to the developer’s vision of a ‘tank’, ‘healer’ or ‘hybrid’. You define your own vision, your own path, your own Incarnation.

All abilities in Fury are associated with one of the four schools and eight disciplines. The abilities from each school are focused on one primary element and two secondary elements. The four elements are Water, Nature, Fire, and Air.

The following are a few examples from Fury’s 400+ distinct abilities.

image Name: Winter’s Embrace
Element: Water
School: Decay
Discipline: Defiler
Charges: Consumption
Effects Category: Field – root
Target Type: Field
Description: Creates a field at the user’s location that will root any enemies within it. They will stay rooted for the duration of the effect unless damaged. The more often this attack is used, the less likely the target is to be affected by it.
Tip: Winter’s Embrace is most useful when you’re surrounded by melee enemies and are in need of some breathing room. Though the effect is broken once you strike an enemy, it will buy you enough time to put some distance between you and your opponents.
image Name: Thunderblast
Element: Air
School: Death
Discipline: Invoker
Charges: Consumption
Effects Category: Damage GTAE debuff
Target Type: Sphere
Description: A ground-targeted attack that deals massive Air damage to all nearby enemies. This ability has the additional benefit of Diseasing your targets, reducing their maximum health.
Tip: Like most AoE abilities, the optimal time to unleash Thunderblast is when you’re surrounded by multiple opponents. Not only will it deal a considerable amount of damage to them, Thunderblast will also reduce their maximum health, making them that much easier to kill.
image Name: Retribution
Element: Fire
School: Death
Discipline: Destroyer
Charges: Consumption
Effects Category: Buff damage out
Target Type: Single target
Description: Gives the target a Mark. If the recipient of this Mark is attacked by an enemy while it is active, their damage output will increase.
Tip: Using Retribution and other helpful buffs are a great way to gain an edge in battle. Preparing for the fight even before it begins can be the difference between a crippling defeat and a rousing victory.
image Name: Timejump
Element: Nature
School: Growth
Discipline: Warden
Charges: Generation
Effects Category: Teleport
Target Type: Single target
Description: Allows the player to select any nearby point and instantly teleport to that location.
Tip: In combat mobility is extremely important. Whether you wish to escape the range of enemy attacks, chase down a fleeing opponent, or teleport to a hard to reach location, Timejump is always useful.
