Barbenheimer and Blockbusters Dominate the Golden Globe Nominations

It was a good year to be dull at the Golden Globes. The nominations came out today, and they were, as predicted, dominated by Barbie and Oppenheimer (known collectively as Barbenheimer). Barbie scooped up nine nominations, and Oppenheimer got eight, though three of Barbie‘s were for Original Song.

The two movies are looking to dominate the Awards Season after dominating box offices and film discussion all year, and this opening salvo is confirmation that they probably will. There were, of course, other films nominated. Yorgas Lathimosā€™Ā Poor Things had a strong showing alongside A24’s critical darling Past Lives. On the TV side, Jury Duty, 1923, and Succession saw great traction, with the latter looking to dominate as this year saw the show’s final season air.

Netflix hauled in the most nominations for a studio overall, and, in general, everything people thought would get nominated did. The only major snub may be America Ferraro missing out on a Supporting Actress nod, especially after her monologue in Barbie was one of the most shared and praised bits of cinema this year.

Of course, the biggest change for the Globes is that each category now has six nominees, allowing for more nominations across the board. A brand new category is also in the mix called “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement,” which basically means an award for the best movie to make lots of money. The category is an obvious attempt to involve popular cinema, which, ironically, backfired this year as four of the nominees (Barbie, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie) were all nominated for Best Picture in their respective categories.
