Best Meta Quest 3 Mixed Reality Games

The best Meta Quest 3 mixed reality games are the ones that really take advantage of the powerful color passthrough, and help splice the digital and real world together in fun ways. We’re still in the early days of the Meta Quest 3, but even now, we’ve got some very cool examples of what the technology is capable of.

Mixed reality games are still very early in their life cycle, and even more niche than virtual reality itself. Most people would consider something like Pokemon Go to be the most popular example of a mixed reality game, but it’s nowhere near the most impressive example, especially now that the Meta Quest 3 is here and ready to completely change the game. If you’ve been wanting to get involved with the best Meta Quest 3 mixed reality games, then good news, because that’s what we’re here to talk about.

It’s worth noting that there are a lot more games other than the ones listed here that are good in mixed reality. Espire 2, for example, lets you bring your living room into the stealth game in a really fun way. However, we’ve tried to make sure these are the best Meta Quest 3 mixed reality games overall, which means lots of games didn’t make the cut.

Demeo

Demeo is one of the best virtual reality games going, and it’s also one of the most relaxed. There’s no running around involved here, because you’re playing a digital tabletop role-playing game where you and a group of friends or strangers all get to try and make it through various dungeons alive. There are plenty of monsters to defeat, skills to find, and strategies you can use to win, but none of that is relevant to mixed reality.

The mixed reality in Demeo is pretty straightforward because you just remove all of the background noise so that you’re left with the table itself, which appears in your playspace. The game also puts a few Demeo posters and paintings in your room, and even hangs a dragon from your ceiling. It’s a great way to play the game, and it helps that Demeo is crossplay across so many platforms too.

BAM

BAM is the answer to the question “what if Smash Bros was in VR sort of?” Played on a tabletop battlefield much like Demeo, you take control of a little fighter battling it out with other players for supremacy. You have to chase down other players using your boost pack, and it all looks amazing.

The mixed reality once again places the battlefield into your play space, but you can play BAM locally, which allows you to see other players too. That’s a big win for safety as well if you’re doing so, because you really don’t want to be punching each other in real life.

Cubism

Cubism is a cool little puzzle game where you have to slot Tetris-style pieces into a single shape. There are a lot of levels to enjoy, and it’s the kind of game that’s great when you’re unwinding for the day and need something a bit calmer, but still want to challenge the old gray matter.

The mixed reality mode brings the pieces and the shape you have to fit them into to your playspace. We like this one a lot because the game also works with hand-tracking, making it feel a lot more magical and natural.

PianoVision

The piano is a fancy old instrument, but learning to play it can be a time-consuming affair. That’s where PianoVision comes in, which actually allows you to connect a keyboard to your device for a more immersive experience.

This game overlays a virtual reality keyboard onto your real-world one, or a flat space, and then shows notes coming down like a game of Guitar Hero. Unlike Guitar Hero though, it matches with the actual instrument really well, which means you can actually learn to play the piano as you play the game.

First Encounters

An image from First Encounters as part of an article on the best mixed reality games for the Meta Quest 3. The image shows a pair of hands holding a pair of sci-fi looking guns firing bubbles through their walls at a fuzzy creature.

First Encounters actually comes pre-installed on every Meta Quest 3, and it’s an exceptional game for anyone who’s interested in mixed reality to play. First Encounters is a puzzle/shooter where adorable aliens burst through your walls and ceiling and you need to shoot them to capture them.

You try to match as many of the same color as you can for higher scores, and the simple premise makes it an awesome introduction to mixed reality gaming, and what the Meta Quest 3 can do. It’s also just a lot of fun, so don’t forget about it when you’re jumping into the other best Meta Quest 3 mixed reality games.
