It’s still over a year away, but Relic is starting to reveal some concrete details about Dawn of War III.

It’s been known for a while that THQ and Relic are working on Dawn of War III, though details have been pretty much non-existant since this fact surfaced back in 2010. That said, Relic has let slip the first big piece of information: Fully customizable armies will be a major component of gameplay.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Relic’s marketing Manager James McDermott explained that Dawn of War II- Retribution paved the way for this decision:

“Looking at what we had real success with with Dawn of War II – Retribution, with the DLC, and with customisation and building their armies and collecting being a big part of what 40k fans really love, we want to make that a big part of DOW3.

“There’s going to be lots of opportunities to expand and build your own custom mega army. That’s definitely an area we want to invest in. We see a good opportunity.”

Additionally, base-building will see a return in the next Dawn of War title, though McDermott promised that this will return to the series, too. “We brought some base building back with Retribution,” he explained. “With DOW3, because it’s going to be a new version, we’re looking at the game as a whole, and we’re really upping the intensity.

More information about Warhammer 40,000: Dawn fo War III will apparently be revealed next month at Gamecom in Germany next month. The game is reportedly due to come out sometime between late 2012 and early 2013.
