Capcom to Devs: Don’t Bow Down Before Publishers

This article is over 16 years old and may contain outdated information

According to Capcom, independent developers who crumple in the face of publishers’ demands will not survive.

“Don’t bow down and say ‘yes master, whatever you want,'” said Adam Boyes, business development director for Capcom USA. “Look to all the big guys out there – BioWare, Insomniac, all these huge developers – they didn’t get there by doing any old project that came their way.”

Boyes said in stark language that attempts to appease developers will end poorly. “Whore yourself and you’ll get buried,” he warned.

He said his own company’s vision prioritized gameplay over technical capability and that games bearing the Capcom label need to “blow people away.”

The well-known publisher is currently working with developers on Dark Void and Bionic Commando.
