Nia DaCosta is reportedly joining the Marvel Studios family as director for Captain Marvel 2. Word of DaCosta’s new position comes from Deadline, which states that she’ll be taking over for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the hero’s first film. DaCosta previously directed 2018 flick Little Woods but is most notably overseeing the Candyman reboot, which is currently set to premiere this October.
Deadline reports that Marvel had met with others to direct the film, though the Candyman director “seemed to have the edge for some time.” WandaVision story editor Megan McDonnell has written the script for Captain Marvel 2, with Brie Larson, of course, set to return as the lead.
Captain Marvel debuted in March of last year, going on to become one of Marvel Studios’ movies to break through the $1 billion box office barrier. After a brief tease in July 2019, the film was unsurprisingly confirmed to get a full-fledged sequel just earlier this year. Marvel voiced its desire to hire a female director at the time.
Captain Marvel 2 currently has a scheduled release date of July 8, 2022, though with film delays rolling in every day, there’s no telling if or when Disney and Marvel will push back the highly anticipated sequel.
