Connected, New Lord and Miller Film, Goes Full Evil Robots in First Trailer

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are probably the biggest things in animation that have nothing to do with Pixar, so when you hear that they as producers basically handpicked Connected director Mike Rianda to make this movie, you should definitely pay attention. The first trailer for the film is now here, and in classic Lord and Miller style, it looks both heartwarming and fun.

The movie tells the story of Katie Mitchell, who gets into film school and is so excited to go, but her father, who feels disconnected from her thanks to all the machines in their lives, decides that they’ll take a road trip to drop her off instead of letting her fly. Things go a bit more awry than one would expect when all the technology in the world starts to take everything over.

While the prospect of a family story about a dad reconnecting with his daughter could work, what obviously makes ConnectedĀ stand out is the robot invasion that takes this trailer into a sharp left. Sony Pictures Animation has always played a distant, distant fourth to Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks, but thanks to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the studio actually has some buzz building. And if this movie works too, their stock could rise.

Connected features the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, and Maya Rudolph. The film will release on Sept. 18, 2020.
