Sylvester Stallone will not rest until every classic action film he’s ever made has a modern sequel. The aging star announced yesterday on Instagram that he is hard at work on a sequel toĀ Demolition Man, his 1993 action/sci-fi blockbuster that co-starred Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock.
Stallone has been answering questions from fans during quarantine, and one of them asked about the longstanding rumors that a sequel was in the works. Stallone, acting as if this is just something you say in the middle of a Q&A, officially confirmed for the first time that Demolition Man 2 is in the works, Warner Bros. is involved, and it’s “looking fantastic.”
Of course, Stallone commenting to a fan thatĀ Demolition Man 2 is a thing does not mean the movie will ever see the light of day. It sounds like the film is in the very early stages, and given quarantine and the complete industry shakeup that’s going on, anything being done today may well be completely forgotten tomorrow. The original film did have a very rich sci-fi world to explore, though; one wonders what a new movie would be about given Stallone’s age.
Stallone has been hit or miss since beginning his streak of franchise relaunches. The Rambo films have been at times bloody and disappointing messes, but Creed was one of the best films made the year it came out and netted Stallone an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor, returning the Rocky films to their former glory. If Demolition Man 2 actually happens and turns out to be good, we can all hope for that sequel to Cliffhanger no one wanted next.
