Electronic Arts made numerous announcements yesterday including record quarter sales on the back of strong EA Sports titles, expectations for the launch of the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3, as well as two new titles.
EA yesterday announced a record second quarter in sales with more than three-quarters of a billion dollars largely on the success of EA Sports titles including Madden ’07, which sold 5 million copies in just over one month. CFO Warren Jenson said in a statement, “This was a strong quarter for EA. While our industry remains in the midst of transition the landscape looks strong enough that we are able to increase our guidance range for the year.”
Jensen also announced its expectations for the coming Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. According to Jensen, “We’re thinking that with PlayStation 3 in North America, the [2006 shipment] range is probably 500,000 to 800,000. If you take the middle of that range, that’s approximately what Microsoft sold last year on the Xbox 360.”
“On the Nintendo Wii, we’re ranging that from 900,000 units to 1.4 million units in North America. In Europe, we have a pretty broad range for the Nintendo Wii, anywhere from 200,000 to 900,000. It’s probably somewhere in the middle of that range.”
Finally, Electronic Arts announced a third The Sims as well as a new Road Rash game expected to be released sometime before 2009. The company also made the not too surprising announcement that E3 hit Crysis and Army of Two had slipped to 2007.
