Female Animal Crossing Villager Is Playable in Super Smash Bros

Female Villager in Smash

Following a male counterpart to the Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, the Villager from Animal Crossing also has a female counterpart.

Super Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed in his Pic of the Day that players can choose to fight as a female Animal Crossing villager as an alternate to the default male villager.

Previously Smash Bros has used alternate palettes for the fighters, but for at least some characters in the new Smash Bros titles will instead use different costumes and genders. Four options, two male and two female, for the Villager are on display in the picture with the different styles of eyes, hair, and clothes from the series.

This is not too surprising as Sakurai had earlier confirmed that the Wii Fit Trainer, who is female by default in Smash Bros, has a playable male alternate with the exact set of moves and mechanics. While seeing the same applied to the Villager isn’t surprising, it’s still worth celebrating having another female character – especially from a series where the genders are equal.

So far the Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer are the only humanoid characters with male and female versions, and from the other options so far, they’re the only ones that makes sense to do this. However, alternate costumes could still apply to the other characters. After all, Pikachu’s worn different hats in earlier Super Smash Bros titles. Some characters would lend themselves well to other costumes, such as Link and his various tunics.
