G.E.C.K. Content Creator For Fallout 3 Released

This article is over 15 years old and may contain outdated information

Bethesda has released the Garden of Eden Creation Kit for Fallout 3, along with a Wiki and a series of tutorial videos explaining how to wring the most out of it.

Better known as the G.E.C.K., the editor will let users create a wide range of new content for Fallout 3, from weapons and objects to character dialog, landscapes and entire towns. Prior to the release of the editor, Game Director Todd Howard said Bethesda views Fallout 3 as “a foundation for even more content” created by both the developer and users, and added, “We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.

Would-be modders can get a feel for what’s involved in Fallout 3 world creation via nine videos, available at the Bethesda Blog or on YouTube, that show the editor in action. Covering topics like area creation, NPCs and patrol, traps and level optimization, the videos show off a system that appears almost frighteningly powerful, if not particularly intuitive. The Wiki also has a series of tutorials that go into greater detail, and also provide examples that can be loaded into the editor.

The game runs on a heavily modified version of the Oblivion engine, so users familiar with the Elder Scrolls Construction Set will probably find themselves right at home with the G.E.C.K. Some changes have been implemented to better accommodate the needs of Fallout 3, however; Construction Set veterans who want to leap straight into the content creation action can find a list of what’s changed here.

It’ll be interesting to see if the release of the G.E.C.K. confirms the Freeman Postulate #1, also known as “time to cock,” although in this case the theory will more likely be proven by way of naked tits. Given the popularity of the “topless nude mod” for Oblivion, I expect something similar for Fallout 3 will be released roughly two minutes ago.

The Garden of Eden Creation Kit Content Editor for Fallout 3 is 8.3 megabytes in size, a mere morsel for any decent connection. Grab yours today and get modding!
