God of War III Almost Didn’t Have a Sex Mini-Game

The infamous “sex mini-game” has been a traditional part of the God of War experience, but it almost didn’t make it into God of War III.

“It was more a debate between me and several of the story writers,” God of War director Stig Asmussen said. “I was like, ‘I’d rather not have it in there at all.'” The mini-game was originally intended to show Kratos as a “man’s man,” but as the series went on, it seemed less necessary. “What is the point? If we do it, it has to have a point,” Asmussen said.

The mini-game, by the time God of War III was in development, was a rather well-known part of the series. It became “…one of these things where we’re damned if we do, and we’re damned if we don’t,” Asmussen said. Not including one would almost seem like they were backing down, making the series seem like it was appeasing critics and losing its edge, whereas including one tends to induce the usual gratuitous sex furor. The team decided if they really had to include the mini-game, they’d try to make it a core part of the storyline. Asmussen said they would make it “something that guides you through the story. You get information and more than just a fluff moment.”

Whether the team can succeed at making the sex mini-game relevant to the plot remains to be seen, though it seems like it may be something of a tall order. Even if they are successful, how many people will actually judge it as part of the story, as opposed to just sex? Still, to their credit the God of War setting is perfect for the existence of such a mini-game, what with Greek Mythology being as fond of sex as it is, so we’ll just have to wait and see if they can pull it off.
