THQ Nordic has greenlit the continuation of work on the remake of classic Euro RPG Gothic after a playable teaser first dropped last year.
The announcement comes in the wake of a survey of players who had tried the teaser. More than 43,000 users were included in the sample, with almost 95% supporting continued development of the teaser into a full-fledged game.
As a result, THQ Nordic will bolster the Barcelona-based team that created the demo and move into full production. The new studio will mark a departure for the series, which was originally created by German team Piranha Bytes in the early 2000s.
More than 180,000 gamers tried the teaser after it was made available for free in December to owners of any of Piranha Bytes’s games (including the first three Gothic games, the Risen series, and ELEX).
The publisher sought a wide array of feedback beyond the question of continued Gothic remake development, the full results of which can be found in this document. THQ Nordic has shared the feedback as the beginning of what it intends to be “a transparent and open production with the community from the very start of the project.”
The three games that make up Piranha Bytes’ contributions to the series were generally well regarded, with their RPG mechanics receiving particular praise.
