American Horror Story‘s Finn Wittrock is set to dive into the brightest day and darkest night, as he has been tapped to play the lead role of Green Lantern Guy Gardner in HBO Max’s upcoming Green Lantern TV show. The series is coming from Greg Berlanti, who produces the Arrowverse shows, and is looking to finally, finally, finally get one of DC’s biggest heroes right on the screen after Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern film basically left the character untouchable for a decade.
Variety reports that Gardner will be true to his comic book character, describing him “as a hulking mass of masculinity” and “an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism.” If that has you worried about the series being some sort of parody, since that was basically what Gardner was in the Justice League comics he appeared in, don’t be. The show is set to focus on a plethora of Earth Green Lanterns and the Green Lantern Corps itself.
The show will span from the beginning of Earth having a Green Lantern in 1941 with FBI Agent Alan Scott to Guy Gardner’s ’80s-tastic Lantern to further beyond. Other Lanterns confirmed are Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Kilowog. There will even be Lanterns that were created just for the show, which has a 10-episode order.
Finn Wittrock is the first casting for the Green Lantern show, but news should come tumbling in of more roles as production ramps up for the series, which will be part of WarnerMedia’s attempt to mimic the success Marvel has had on Disney+ with its shows. There is a Justice League Dark series, the Matt Reeves The Batman spin-off series, a Peacemaker show with John Cena, and much more. Interestingly, many of these shows don’t seem to take place in the same universe with DC going hard into the multiverse efforts. The Green Lantern series may be connected to the Arrowverse given it’s being made by Berlanti and other CW show alums, but it could also be an entirely separate thing like Black Lightning was when it first launched.
