The Silence of the Lambs is an oldie but a goodie. It originally terrified audiences in 1991, and it’s been scaring people ever since. It helps that this thriller has two very dangerous people to be afraid of. If Hannibal Lecter doesn’t scare you then they have Buffalo Bill, so they have something for everyone.

Alien may have come out in 1979 but it will still keep you cowering. This tension filled thriller has the potential to have a very scary xenomorph behind any corner. If you’re looking for something that will leave you jumping then look no further than this classic.

Director David Cronenberg has become known as a modern master of terror. One reason he’s earned that title is one of his first films, 1975’s Shivers, or aka They Came from Within. This movie tells the story of the tenants of a high class apartment building that get infected by parasites that turn them into sex-crazed fiends. These fiends can transmit the parasites through any sexual contact. So definitely a date movie.

2010’s Troll Hunter follows students as they follow a series of bear killings. Soon they discover that this is much more than they had planned, it’s not just a poacher or bear hater. Soon they meet up with a legitimate hunter that will take us all places that we didn’t think we would ever go.

If you’re in the mood for foreign horror we suggest the tension filled film High Tension. This 2003 flick follows two women as they are thrown into a very very bad situation. It starts with them heading out to a farm in the middle of nowhere and then the shit hits the fan. Be prepared to wet yourself, because this will go places you never thought it would.

2005’s tale of spelunking gone wrong is The Descent. It centers around a group of women that are getting together after a long time apart. This time, for their meeting, they’re going to explore some caves in North Carolina. Spelunking sounds scary enough on its own, but factor in that almost everyone involved knows nothing about caves, and this just gets scarier.

2012 brought us the terrifying V/H/S. This film is a series of vignettes that centers around a seemingly empty house filled with VHS tapes. The house gets broken into and the interlopers discover the cache of video tapes and starts watching them. What they see is what makes up the film, it’s some seriously f’ed up stuff. This will stick in your head for a little while so be prepared to lose a bit of sleep.

This last entry on the list takes place on Christmas, it’s about two nice families that are having their normal family drama when in comes the horrifying character of Madea. She turns everything on its head and shows that even Christmas has its dark side. Don’t let children see this as they may end up terrified for life.
