To install Hogwarts Legacy mods, you’ll have a few things:

  1. A PC capable of running the game (since the console versions don’t support modding).
  2. Hogwarts Legacy on Steam or the Epic Games Store.
  3. A Nexus Mods account (you can register one for free here).
  4. Nexus Mods Vortex Mod Manager (I’ll also show you how to install mods manually, but this makes things a lot easier).
  5. A few gigs of spare hard drive space for downloading and installing mods.

Got all those? Here’s how to install Hogwarts’ Legacy mods, with our mod manager and manual Hogwarts Legacy modding guides.

How to install Hogwarts Legacy mods using Vortex Mod Manager

Nexus Mods Vortex

Method one is to install the official Nexus Mods Vortex Mod Manager. To use Vortex, you need to do this:

  • Download Vortex (We recommend the 1-click install).
  • Install it, then run it (It may prompt you to install .NET. Itā€™ll download and install it for you, so say yes.
  • Click on Games, then in the Unmanaged section, find Hogwarts Legacy.
  • Click on Manage, the button in the middle of Hogwarts Legacy, and when it says it will need to install an extension, click download.
  • Click Log in on Website, which will open your web browser. If you donā€™t have a Nexus Mods account, youā€™ll need to create one. If you do have one, log in. Click on Authorise on the site.
  • Go back to Vortex, and itā€™ll try to find Hogwarts Legacy manually. If it canā€™t, youā€™ll need to go to Steam, find the game and right click on it, click on Manage, and then click on Browse Local Files. This will show you the directory you need to browse. It will probably be: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Hogwarts Legacy\.
  • Click on Games, and youā€™ll see Hogwarts Legacy in Managed Games.
  • Now, to install a mod, find the mod you want and click on the Mod Manager Download button with the Vortex icon, next to the Manual button. If thereā€™s no Vortex button, that means the mod is not available for Vortex install, and youā€™ll have to install it manually.
  • Itā€™ll download a file and prompt you to open an NXM link. Do that and Vortex will install the mod.
  • You can now run the game normally, via Steam, and the mod will be active.
  • To uninstall the mod, click on the mods button down the side and click on ā€œRemoveā€ next to the mod. You can also disable and enable individual mods.

How to Install Hogwarts Legacy Mods Manually

Alternatively, you can install mods manually without using Vortex.

  • Find and download the mod you want from Nexus Mods.
  • Unzip them into a directory. If they are .rar files youā€™ll need a program like 7-zip.
  • You need to know where your game is installed. For example, for Steam it may be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common or C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common.
  • Check the modā€™s page for any special instructions, but usually, you just have to put the files into the right folder.
  • What you will normally have to do is copy the files (in Windows Explorer, drag to select them, then right-click and choose copy), then go to your Hogwarts Legacy directory.
  • Now, paste in the contents of the zip (right-click in a blank area and select paste), which should just be a folder called Phoenix. There will already be a Phoenix folder in the directory you are pasting it into.
  • You may be asked to overwrite some files. If so, overwrite them.
  • Now, you can run the game as normal and the mod should be installed.
  • To delete a mod, go to your Hogwarts Legacy directory, then to \Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods and delete the files you pasted in.

How to Troubleshoot Hogwarts Legacy Mods

Mods, by their nature, alter the way a game works so you may have a few teething problems. However, there are a few tips we can give you to help.

  1. Make sure that you have installed the mod in the right place. Ideally, instructions will be on the page you got the mod from.
  2. First, use Vortex Mod Manager – it makes installing Hogwarts Legacy mods a lot easier.
  3. Check the mod’s page and see if it mentions being dependent on any other mods. If it does, you’ll have to have that mod, or mods, installed first.
  4. Look for any mention of the mod requiring a specific version of the game. If you’ve recently updated Hogwarts Legacy, it may be that the update has inadvertently broken the mod, and you’ll need to wait for the modder to catch up and fix it.
  5. Make sure your PC meets the minimum specifications for running Hogwarts Legacy (see the Hogwarts Legacy Steam page). You might have been getting away with a slightly lower spec, but the mod makes the game more CPU or memory-intensive.
  6. It may be also that some mods are conflicting with each other; try using just one at first, or give this Mod Merger a try.

There’s no shortage of Hogwarts Legacy mods, but which ones should you play? To help you choose, here are some of the most popular Hogwarts Legacy mods on NexusMods, along with how they enhance or alter the game.

NPC Schedule Enhanced (Khione95)

This mod makes Hogwarts feel more like an actual school, not just a big castle with NPCs hanging around. It gives NPCs actual schedules to follow, arriving and departing from classes and attending the Great Hall.

Character Editor (NathDev)

Want to change your character after you’ve made them? I’m not just talking about costumes; what if you want to change their physical appearance? That’s where this mod comes in, letting you edit your character on the fly.

Mouse Controls for Broom (r457)

Want more control of your broom? This mod lets you fly your broom with a mouse and also supports inverted control if you’d prefer.

Silencio – Floo Lady Silencer (TangerieDev)

There are only so many times you can wander around Hogwarts before you wish the Floo Lady would get laryngitis. Is she terrified that you’ll forget the Floo network exists? Whatever her reasons, this silences her.

Companions Mod (Khione95)

From the maker of the NPC Schedule Enhanced mod, this mod allows you to take companions with you on your travels. You can even enlist the help of professors, which is cool if slightly suspect.

And that’s how to install mods in Hogwarts Legacy. If you’re in the mood for some silly mods, Shrek-broom included, here’s our guide to Hogwarts Legacy‘s stranger PC mods.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch.
