And nominees are… mostly white men again. The Oscars announced their award nominees this morning, and there wasn’t too much unexpected. Leading the pack with 11 nominations was the controversial Joker, which landed noms in almost every major category that didn’t involve women acting. That was followed by three other movies that pulled in 10 nominations:Ā The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood,Ā andĀ 1917. Probably the most surprising thing this year is how dominant South Korean film Parasite is, with a stunning six nominations. That’s quite the haul for a foreign-language film, which historically have trouble breaking out of their own category, let alone nabbing multiple nominations, including Best Picture.
Joker‘s nominations come in a spade of categories including Best Picture, but its most likely chance to win is in the Best Actor category, which surprisingly snubbed Robert DeNiro for his role in The Irishman. Joaquin Phoenix has been dominating the category throughout the awards season and is the clear frontrunner to pick it up. Outside of that, however, it’s not clear ifĀ Joker can pull the votes to win anything else despite being nominated for so much. The Best Picture category is especially up in the air withĀ Parasite gaining a ton of momentum in the past few weeks, Netflix pushing hard for both The IrishmanĀ andĀ Marriage Story, andĀ 1917 landing the Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Director.
There’s going to be more controversy around diversity at these Oscars again as well. There are no female directors nominated for the second year in a row, despite more women directing films in 2019 than ever before. The biggest perceived snub here is Greta Gerwig forĀ Little Women, which received six other nominations, including Best Picture. That did leave a spot open for Bong Joon-ho to get nominated, which could give another foreign-language film the Best Director win after Alfonso CuarĆ³n won last year. The dark horse here is Quentin Tarantino, who has yet to win an Oscar for Best Director and might see this be his year.
This year’s Oscars will once again not have a host as the awards try to avoid any and all things that are interesting controversial and will air on Feb. 9, 2020, on ABC at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT.
