Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain New Trailer at Sony Conference

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Snake goes nuclear in the new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain still doesn’t have a solid release date, but a new trailer is can be watched now. Actually, the trailer leaked last night and quickly disappeared, but the full version is now available to view legitimately. The new title follows the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, which was a short title that followed Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

The trailer is interesting in how different it is from the Phantom Pain trailers released at previous conferences. The supernatural beings in the hospital are nowhere to be seen (from the trailer before Metal Gear was in the title of the game) and the open-world desert isn’t in the picture at all. For this trailer, Kojima apparently decided to focus on the thematic issues of the game, the loss of humanity apparently is a big one with every other character missing a body part, having a cybernetic enhancement, or apparently growing horns (What’s up with that, Snake? You okay?)

A few icons from the Metal Gear franchise are visible, though. The Big Shell from MGS2, at least two characters we already knew were in the game (Ocelot and Hal Emmerich’s father), and a young blonde kid with a knife that could maybe be a young Frank Jaeger. You know how much Kojima likes to wrap everything around the same characters.
