Yo Adrienne, there’s a “triple-A” Rambo videogame coming next year!
There have been a few Rambo videogames over the years for a multitude of platforms ranging from the NES to the Commodore 64, Atari ST and DOS-based PCs, but it’s been a couple of decades since we last had a chance to saddle up as Sylvester Stallone’s special forces super-soldier. That’ll all change next year, however, thanks to U.K.-based publisher Reef Entertainment, which recently acquired the rights to develop new games based on the films.
“I am a big fan of Sylvester Stallone movies, and when we had the opportunity to secure the video game rights from StudioCanal for the Rambo franchise, we had to grab it with both hands,” Reef Entertainment CEO Peter Rezon told MCV. “With the success of the most recent Rambo film, and an international appetite for action movies with Expendables 2 scheduled for release next summer, we felt now was a good time to do something special with this license.”
Details are pretty much non-existent at this point but Reef’s Craig Lewis promised the game would be a “triple-A” release. “We have big ambitions for Reef and the Rambo IP is the first step in establishing us as a worldwide player,” he said.
Despite its reputation as a by-the-numbers action franchise that occasionally treads uncomfortably close to parody, the original 1982 film First Blood was actually pretty smart for an action flick. It was pyrotechnical and bloody, but it also featured a broken Vietnam vet who was first shunned and then hunted by a society that would rather sweep him under the rug than deal with what he represents. It’s probably wishful thinking to hope for some of that intelligence in the new game, but I can dream.
Reef’s Rambo is expected to come out sometime in 2012, for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. And yes, for the record, the “Yo Adrienne” thing was a joke. Give me a little credit here.
