Nintendo is updating the basic Nintendo Switch model with under-the-hood improvements and new cosmetic options, as well as launching new Joy-Con color combinations.
The company is releasing an upgraded version of the original Switch with an increased battery life. The new model, the HAC-001(-01), will have a battery life of roughly 4.5-to-9 hours, depending on the game being played. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will last about 5.5 hours on the new console. This represents a healthy improvement over the original HAC-001 model, which runs for 2.5-to-6.5 hours and offers players about 3 hours of Zelda time.
Strangely, this development will give the basic Switch model a greater battery life than the recently announced Switch Lite, which was pitched to consumers in part on its improved battery life.
The Switch is also getting some jaunty new Joy-Con colors. Not content to let the original Switch be upstaged by the Lite’s vibrant yellow and turquoise offerings, the new Joy-Con options will feature the lively, Splatoon-approved pairings of navy with neon yellow, and purple with neon orange.

VG247 claims the new Switch model is expected in Japan and North America in August, while a September release for Europe has been confirmed. When it drops, it will be recognizable by its serial number, which will begin with “XKW” rather than the original model’s “XAW.” The new Joy-Con colors will be available Oct. 4.
