Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time Coming Next Month

This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time will launch in July as a free-to-play game exclusively for iOS devices.

EA’s PopCap Games has finally shone some light on the long-awaited sequel to the mega-hit tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies, and some of what’s been revealed may come as a surprise. It will be a free-to-play title, “designed from the ground up as a live service” as the PopCap press release put it, and the “indeterminate number of platforms” teased last month has been reduced to iOS-exclusivity.

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time will feature new plants, zombies and other features, including power-ups that allow players to “interact” with zombies directly, and thanks to the magic of time-travel will take place on lawns set in both the past and the future. PopCap says the game will be updated on an ongoing basis with new content and game mechanics. The “vast majority” of the game will be available at no cost, but dedicated fans will be able to purchase upgrades and in-game items as they desire.

“We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game,” Senior Producer Allen Murray said. “We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content.”

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time launches on July 18 for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
