Red 5 Unveils MMOG Shooter, Firefall

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

After five years of (very) quiet work, Red 5 Studios has finally revealed its first game.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Red 5 Studios. Between the crazy recruiting drive they had a few years ago and then the recent news that the studio had to lay off a significant portion of its workforce, it honestly seemed like the studio was possibly going to disappear before it ever released a game. It turns out this was the wrong thing to assume, because the developer has formally announced Firefall, an online “team-based action shooter” that actually looks pretty cool.

Red 5 officially unveiled the game at the Penny Arcade Expo, but everything that was on display there is now online. This includes the cinematic trailer (seen here) and a ten minute video of gameplay footage. The footage shows how you can switch between third and first-person perspectives, mine resources, fly vehicles around what looks like an immense world, and get into some pretty crazy firefights.

Based on the actual in-game footage, Firefall looks like a cross between Tribes, Borderlands, and Starship Troopers. That isn’t meant as an insult, either; the game legitimately looks like it has taken the best parts from each franchise (the jetpacks, the art style, and the insect-like enemies) and created something that looks really fun and fresh.

The game’s official website also has a section where you can sign up to be a part of the game’s beta testing.
