Red Dead Redemption is Game of the Year

The Escapist names Rockstar’s Unique Western the Best Game of 2010

Durham, NC — January 21, 2011 — The Escapist is excited to announce it’s pick for 2010 Game of the Year: Rockstar Game’s Red Dead Redemption, the critically lauded blockbuster Western open-world shooter, recognized both for its engaging and well-told narrative and innovative gameplay and design.

The Game of the Year is The Escapist‘s highest honor, recognizing the videogame industry’s annual evolution as an interactive entertainment medium, highlighting the one, single game the editorial team believes symbolizes the strengths of gaming’s best efforts and the industry’s state of the art.

“There were plenty of great games released in 2010, and several we felt would be worthy of representing the state of play in 2010,” said Russ Pitts, Editor-in-Chief of The Escapist, “but Red Dead, with it’s startlingly successful take on the Western genre, mixed with engaging play mechanics and an overabundance of fun stood apart.”

The game is well written, but much of what makes Red Dead Redemption special is the amount to see and do. Players are free to explore the Old West setting at their own pace, meeting heroes and outlaws, and seeking their own role in Rockstar’s scrupulously detailed world.

“Since most of us will probably never really live up to our childhood ambitions of being real cowboys or cowgirls, Red Dead Redemption fills a crucial and long-standing need,” said Steve Butts, Managing Editor of The Escapist. “For us, games are about wish-fulfillment, and this one delivers everything we could want, from showdowns to roundups, and does it brilliantly.”
