The Super Bowl is coming, and that means the movie trailers are coming too. Of course, in this day and age you can watch every ad and trailer before the game occurs, and if you gotta go fast like Sonic then of course you’re going to drop your trailer early. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie Super Bowl teaser trailer or (“Big Game Spot” commercial, if you prefer) opens with a bit of a pun and then dives right into the Sonic vs. Knuckles action.
In comparison to the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which mostly just teased Knuckles’ involvement, this teaser focuses pretty directly on the showdown between the blue hedgehog and the red echidna. Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carey) has returned with Knuckles, and they’re searching for a Chaos Emerald that can destroy civilizations. Sonic must join up with Tails, who brought his plane along, to save the earth while James Marsden sits in a boat and looks really old.
From the Super Bowl trailer, it looks like the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is going to steal even more heavily from the video games than the first, surprisingly good one did. Where the first movie focused on bringing Sonic into our world, there’s definitely a lot more “video gamey” stuff going on here. You’ve even got a giant Robotnik robot launching missiles at Sonic while he cruises on top of Tails’ biplane, a feat stolen directly from levels in multiple games.
The film also stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails. Jeff Fowler is returning to direct.
It’s a pretty short teaser so there’s not much more to say other than to remind everyone that this did happen, and we are clearly living in the best timeline where we aren’t watching a sequel involving those horrible hedgehog teeth.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes out on April 8. Check out some new images below.
