Creator Derek Yu has released a batch of screenshots of Future 2010 Game of the Year contender Spelunky for XBLA, and they look fantastic.
We’re not usually the type to post screenshots of unreleased games, but every once in a while you have to make an exception. Yesterday, Derek Yu wrote a brief update to Spelunky’s official site in which he discussed his progress on the game’s XBLA release, including a number of graphical improvements like bombs with dynamic lighting that throw moving shadows across the walls and water that ripples with every piece of rubble that drops into it. “We’re doing everything we can to make it feel new, and totally made for the Xbox 360 … without losing any of the original game’s depth,” Yu said.
But the real highlight of the post is the link to four gigantic screenshots Yu posted of the game’s first two zones, featuring the same basic models and design that Spelunky players have grown to love, but in a beautiful, high-resolution, hand-painted style – think a slightly less impressionistic version of Braid‘s colorful artwork.
To hardcore Spelunky fans (and really, there’s only one kind of Spelunky fan): You may want start considering picking up a 360 if you don’t already own one.
