Square Enix Drops Plans for Final Fantasy XIII DLC

The best laid plans of Moogles and Malboro’s often go awry, which it seems is exactly what happened to plans for Final Fantasy XIII DLC.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama said apologized to fans who were expecting downloadable content for the game, saying that plans to expand the game had not come to fruition. “We were planning to make some DLC,” he said, “But that plan wound up not happening.”

Toriyama had commented before Final Fantasy XIII’s launch in Japan that players should “hold on to their saves” after they’d finished the game. Many took this to mean that DLC was coming, a belief bolstered when art director Isamu Kamikokuryou said that a lot of completed content had been cut from the game. At the time, however, Toriyama said that Kamikokuryou’s had been taken out of context, and said that Square Enix wasn’t planning any DLC at that time.

It’s possible that Square Enix didn’t want to reveal the content before it was ready, and it’s also possible that when Toriyama made that statement in February, the DLC had already been ruled out. Either way, his most recent statement is pretty unequivocal, and Final Fantasy XIII DLC is sadly no longer on the cards.
