The Green Knight Trailer Brings Epic Arthurian Legend to Life

The Green Knight has been on a quest for a release date longer than one for the Holy Grail, but the film is finally coming and we have the first full trailer since teasers started landing last year. The movie is an adaptation of the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and looks absolutely stunning, with an otherworldly feel to it and awesome cinematography.

The movie was originally slated to premiere at last year’s SXSW but was put on hold when the festival was canceled, sitting in purgatory for months. Back then The Green Knight had early Oscar buzz, and this trailer shows why. David Lowery wrote and directed it, and he is carving a name for himself with low-key fantastic movies including the woefully underrated Pete’s Dragon and the overlookedĀ The Old Man & the Gun, Robert Redford’s (supposedly) last film.

The film follows the story of Sir Gawain (Patel), King Arthur’s nephew and a knight of the round table, as he quests to confront the Green Knight after being challenged by him during a New Year’s feast. The story focuses mainly on Gawain’s efforts with the lord and lady of a castle, but the film seems to be expanding on the storyline, diving into the adventures he has on his way there. The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Erin Kellyman.

The Green Knight will release in theaters on July 30, 2021.
