The day of Amazon’s massively expensiveĀ Lord of the Rings gamble is almost upon us, and we’re finally getting a full-fledged look at the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The streamer dropped a newĀ Rings of Power “main teaser” trailer that gives us our most in-depth look at the series, highlighting its plethora of characters, storylines, and stunning Middle-earth locales.
The new series takes place well before J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved trilogy and tells the tale of how the Rings of Power were forged, as well as the eventual rise of Sauron over the peoples of Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power main teaser trailer gives us a good look at the younger versions of Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) as they argue over the severity of what is happening. We also see a slew of the other races that populate Middle-earth at this time, including the dwarves in their caves, some hobbits trekking across the land, and humans farming and supposedly living in Gondor, which we see in a stunning shot. With a massive and sprawling storyline, not too much is revealed in terms of plot, but we do get a look at the series possibly jumping even further back in time at points as we see the Trees of Valinor providing light in an earlier age.
The show truly does look epic, a far cry from some of the cheaper-looking images we first saw as Amazon teased the series, which many were upset by. It’s clear that the studio is basically going for a series that looks like Peter Jackson’s six Lord of the Rings films, as while there are subtle changes here and there, the overall feel is basically the same. This isn’t some new take on the franchise, which is probably smart considering Amazon wants to turn it into its own MCU / Star Trek / Star Wars / Game of Thrones expanded universe. Whether or not it can hold a candle to the films is yet to be seen, but they’re certainly trying.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.
