$10,000 isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? $1.9 million.
A new tabletop card game appeared on Kickstarter yesterday, and it’s already taken its $10,000 goal, loaded it into a rocket, and shot the figure into the sun.
Exploding Kittens is fresh game designed by Elan Lee, Shane Small, and Matthew Inman (better known as The Oatmeal), starting its crowdfunding campaign yesterday with a $10,000 funding goal. At the time of publication, its funding now sits at $1.9 million. That’s 19,000 percent beyond the Kickstarter goal, and the original $10,000 amount was met in just 20 minutes.
The simplest way to explain Exploding Kitten? You need to prevent a kitten from exploding on your turn. There are defuse cards, turn skip cards, and an entire arsenal of weapons to get that bombastic feline into the hands of someone else at the table. The game’s designers (those not named after a breakfast dish) are Xbox and Marvel veterans, while The Oatmeal is putting his famous digital paintbrush to work on the art.
$20 is the entry fee for a card deck, and the tiers are currently pretty simple. $35 gets you two decks (including one “NSFW” deck that has more…colorful cards), $100 gets you four decks, and $500 nets you one custom-drawn card for your own collection. There’s been no mention of stretch goals yet, but the astronomic funding figure could change that in the coming days.
