Take a look at the coolest, the prettiest, and the downright most bizarre sights of Tokyo Game Show 2014.
“Only in Japan” is an expression that has come to encapsulate those crazy, weird, and bizarre phenomena that can simply only happen in the country that brought the world tentacle porn. Tokyo Game Show, of course, is no exception, and while there were quite a few cool and beautiful sights, there was no lack of that trademark Japan weirdness. Take a look at some of my favorite snaps from the show’s first two press and industry-only business days.
First up, Psycho Break, the Japanese name for The Evil Within, was once again dominating the show’s main entrance.
Showgoers could take out their frustrations in a Resident Evil-themed airsoft shooting gallery.
Here we had a game where attendees had to scan the heads of balding men at a supermarket. Don’t ask why.
A nice establishing shot of the show floor.
Some of Konami’s booth babes, advertising the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V.
World of Warships.
The Oculus Rift featured heavily at this year’s show. Sometimes, innocently, but other times…
… not so innocently.
Motorbike fans were in for a treat, as not only was there this sweet Monster Hunter ride…
… but an equally sweet Evangelion one.
There was also a sweet Monster Hunter-themed guitar and leather jacket.
Here we have, hands down, the most “Only in Japan” sight of the whole show. A game called “Onechan’s Bra” or “My Sister’s Bra”. I have no words.
Actually scratch that. This time I really do have no words…
They wouldn’t let me ride on this merry-go-round :(.
EA always has a fairly extravagant booth, and this year was no different.
Bloodborne, which was playable for the first time at the show, dominated Sony’s booth.
EA had some rather authentic cosplayers for Dragon Age Inquisition.
It wouldn’t be Tokyo Game Show without at least one Gundam.
Do you want milk, sugar, or Gundam with your coffee?
Daigo “The Beast” Umehara taking on anyone foolish enough to challenge him at the Mad Catz booth.
In a reflection Japan’s console preference, at almost every exhibit that had both an Xbox One and PS4 option, the Xbox One line was considerably shorter. Poor Microsoft.
Move over Goat Simulator, this indie game used the Occulus Rift to simulate life as a hamster.
The Square Enix merch both had some seriously cool custom figures on display, like this awesome Samurai and Sparta-themed Batman…
… steampunk Batman…
… and my personal favourite – Cowboy Batman.
Back to the weird stuff. This game, entitled “Let’s Spanking!” was controlled by “spanking” various sensors placed around your body.
These girls promoting the upcoming Yakuza title were dressed up as Japanese hostess bar “Mamas”.
Hatsune Miku, the vocaliod sensation sweeping Japan, showed up in quite a few displays.
Alienware had dozens of its upcoming “Steam Box Alpha” consoles on display, running a variety of games at quite impressive resolutions.
This handsome Monster Hunter man was one of the few male “booth babes”.
Lastly, while not technically at Tokyo Game Show, I did venture to the closest Burger King to get a bite of the just-released, limited time, mysterious “black cheeseburger”.
That’s it for the business days! Be sure to check back here tomorrow, for our roundup of the best cosplay from the show.
