Train to Busan Hollywood Remake Potentially Getting Veteran Horror Director

The Hollywood remake of South Korean zombie thriller Train to Busan may have found its director in Timo Tjahjanto. According to Deadline, the Indonesian horror veteran has entered negotiations with production company New Line to head the project. Tjahjanto has previously been responsible for the May the Devil Take You series, The Night Comes for Us, and a segment of V/H/S 2, among others.

The screenplay for the upcoming Train to Busan remake is being adapted from the original by Gary Dauberman, another talent keenly associated with horror who has previously written the It and Annabelle films. Meanwhile, James Wan of Saw, The Conjuring, and Insidious fame is signed on as a producer alongside Michael Clear, Nicolas Atlan, and Terry Kalagian.

Train to Busan released in 2016, quickly becoming a surprise international hit. The film takes place during an apocalyptic zombie outbreak in South Korea, following a dwindling group of survivors aboard a train heading from Seoul to Busan. The remake will almost certainly transplant the action to another country, but no concrete details about how it may differ from the original have yet been revealed.

The South Korean film also seems to be developing into a franchise in its own right, beginning with an animated prequel and continuing with last year’s shared-universe tale Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula.
