Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut just got a story trailer that teases its new expansion focused on Iki Island. In the footage, the original game’s protagonist, Jin Sakai, sets out to return to the island. Following a shipwreck, it looks like players will have access to new locations, characters, stories, and new enemies to fight. See the footage from developer Sucker Punch Productions in the trailer below.
Sucker Punch senior writer Patrick Downs shared more information about Iki Island and the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut content in a PlayStation.Blog post. Jin’s next adventure begins when he learns that a Mongol tribe has taken control of Iki Island. Led by Ankhsar Khatun, otherwise known as the Eagle, Downs says players will be met by a danger “unlike any they have faced” before. Sucker Punch will continue telling more personal stories in the Iki Island expansion, and this narrative will explore healing for both the player and Jin.
“Our semi-fictional version of Iki Island provides a stark contrast to Tsushima,” Downs said. “It is a wild, lawless land of raiders and criminals, scarred by memories of war, and fiercely independent; the samurai have not been in control there for decades. Skilled though he is, Jin can’t take on the Mongols alone. He will have to work with—or around—a coterie of unsavory characters to take the fight to the Eagle. The cost of failure is too high. If the Eagle and her tribe subdue Iki and muster the support of its people, Tsushima and the rest of Japan will be in grave danger.”
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut launches August 20 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Owners of the original game can upgrade to the Director’s Cut version for $19.99.
