Lost in Space 3 season 3 Netflix Zack Estrin multi-year deal

Lost in Space Season 3 Is Confirmed, Will Be the Last

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

It looks like Will Robinson’s days of being in danger will once again come to an end. Netflix has renewedĀ Lost in Space for a third season, but it will also be its last. You’ll have plenty of time to mourn, however, as season 3 isn’t expected to arrive until 2021.

According toĀ Lost in Space executive producer/showrunner Zack Estrin, this was always the plan as the creative team envisioned the series as a trilogy:

From the beginning, weā€™ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A three-part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. Itā€™s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode ā€” if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission ā€” itā€™s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smithā€¦ and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, Iā€™m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.

Netflix had a hit on its hands with the family sci-fi show when the first seasons launched with reportedly high ratings and plenty of buzz on social media. The second season didn’t quite light the same spark in the larger zeitgeist though, and since Netflix doesn’t release regular numbers for all its series, it is hard to know how well the series did and if this cancellation could be at all tied to that.

Netflix, for its part, must have some confidence inĀ Lost in Space on the whole, as they’ve also inked a deal with Estrin to produce new series for the streamer over the next few years.

There’s no word on season 3’s storyline yet, but it will continue the adventures of the Robinson family as they try to find their way to their colony in Alpha Centauri. The entire cast is expected to return, including Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Maxwell Jenkins, Mina Sundwall, Taylor Russell, Ignacio Serricchio, and Parker Posey.
