Ridley Scott is dipping his toes back into the world of robots, androids, and questions of the soul, but this time he isn’t dragging the Alien franchise along with it. Raised by Wolves received its first trailer today and looks like the kind of introspective, action-filled sci-fi that Ridley built his name on. Scott himself will be directing the first two episodes of the series, something he hasn’t done for television for decades, which is coming to HBO Max.
The trailer focuses on a female android called Mother, but the series is about two androids: Mother and Father (Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim). The pair have been tasked with raising a group of children on an alien planet after humanity has all but destroyed itself. Things don’t quite seem to go right, whether it’s from the androids being confused by the illogical nature of children or other familial conflicts — a lot of violence seems set to occur.
The show is HBO Max’s stab at the heady world of thought-provoking science fiction. Think Westworld or Ex Machina more than Star Wars. It also definitely looks like a Ridley Scott film with muted colors and powerfully framed shots. Scott’s last stab at this genre, Alien: Covenant, was a bit of a mess, despite where the director wanted to take the story, so he can hopefully deliver something a bit more compelling this time.
Raised by Wolves also stars Travis Fimmel, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar, Matias Varela, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Jordan Loughran, Aasiya Shah, and Ivy Wong. It will release on HBO Max on Sept. 3.
