Rumor: Sony Is Acquiring Bluepoint Games in the Near Future

A rumor has emerged that Sony is acquiring Bluepoint Games, the developer of high-profile remakes like of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, with an official announcement to be made by the end of February 2021. This stems from ResetEra user MarsipanRumpan, who cites two anonymous sources. The user came to an advance agreement with the moderators of the forum that, should such an announcement not occur by the end of February, the user will be banned from the forum.

The user claims the acquisition deal is being finalized right now, and the Demon’s Souls remake for PlayStation 5 was a sort of “final test” for the studio to impress Sony. Due to the positive reception of the remake, Sony is satisfied with Bluepoint’s work ethic and output.

One of the most notable stipulations in the alleged acquisition is that Bluepoint wants to create an original IP, as the studio doesn’t want to be known as just the “remake” studio. In addition to Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, Bluepoint has also delivered remasters like Gravity Rush Remastered and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Currently, Bluepoint Games is independent. However, due to the quick pace at which the games industry is evolving, the studio is comfortable with its relationship with Sony and allegedly wants to go further. Additionally, the studio’s talent could partner with other developers for future remakes of dormant Sony IP.
