The G-Serum Reference in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Explained

The G-Serum is mentioned right at the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Essentially, the end of the game sees Peter Parker and Miles Morales taking down Harry Osborn and the Venom symbiote. This leaves Harry in a deeply precarious medical state and back in the care of Norman, who is understandably distraught about what’s happened to his son. He then tells someone over the phone to “get the G-Serum ready ASAP.”

The answer to what the G-Serum is lay in the comics. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Norman Osborn was introduced in 1966’s Amazing Spider-Man #37, only that’s not entirely true. Osborn actually first appeared in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man #14 as the Green Goblin, one of Spider-Man’s fiercest enemies.

As the Green Goblin, Osborn has greatly enhanced strength, durability, and other abilities, which he pairs with his money and access to tech. In that capacity, he’s been one of Peter Parker’s fiercest foes, having sent his life into disarray and chaos on several occasions. Osborn got his powers from a special serum, which is sometimes called the Goblin Serum. This can easily be shortened to G-Serum, answering the question of what that means in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The potential introduction of Osborn as Green Goblin is big, especially considering how the ending sets up the return of Doctor Octopus. Green Goblin has caused no end of problems for Spider-Man in the comics, and I’m excited to see what he can do next. That being said, it’s not totally clear at the time of writing if Norman will end up using the G-Serum or if that will fall to Harry.

And that’s what you need to know about the G-Serum in the Marvel Universe.
