Need something to keep you out of the sun this weekend? There’s plenty to watch.

Though this week’s big new release is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, there’s plenty to watch whether you want to head to the theater or stay at home. This week we have, of course, apes, but also some great new TV in Hemlock Grove and Extant. Read on — you’re sure to find something worth watching this weekend.

In theaters now
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens today and, really, what are you doing still reading this when you could be watching this epic clash of man vs. ape? If you’re reading this because you’ve already watched it, then there are some alternatives: Amazon Prime will let you stream the classic movies, including Planet Of The Apes (1968), Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970), Escape From The Planet Of The Apes
(1971), Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972), and Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973).

Still in theaters is Transformers: Age of Extinction, so if you aren’t in the mood for man vs. ape, you can always go for man vs. robot. And if you were interested in seeing Joon-ho Bong’s post-apocalyptic train movie
Snowpiercer
, it’s opening in more cities this weekend and it’s now available to buy or rent on iTunes — still, if you want to catch it in a theater, check your local listings to see if it’s playing near you.

On TV this week
Season 2 of Netflix’s horror series Hemlock Grove landed on Netflix today, so if you’re looking for something new to binge-watch you’re covered. If horror isn’t your thing, the new Halle Berry scifi series Extant premiered on CBS this week — and it’s definitely worth watching. You can watch the first episode on CBS.com and it should show up on Amazon Prime soon, too.

Looking forward, Legend of Korra returns to Nickelodeon tonight after a break for the holiday, but Sunday’s the real busy TV day this weekend. TV watchers can look forward to the continuation of True Blood‘s final season on HBO, Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain premieres on FX, and both Masters of Sex season 2 and Ray Donovan season 2 premiere on Showtime. Set your DVRs!

Heading into next week, 24: Live Another Day is taking its last bow on Monday night. Will this be the last we’ll see of Jack Bauer? Not if Fox thinks they can eke any more money out of this series.

Breaking Bad Walter White

Catch up with the Emmy nominees
If the Emmy nominees was just a long list of shows you haven’t gotten around to watching, a lot of them are streaming online… and they’re all well worth checking out.

HBO’s slate of nominees including Game of Thrones, True Detective, Silicon Valley, and Veep aren’t to be found on streaming subscription services, but HBO subscribers can watch all seasons on demand via HBO GO.
